Champange's

No, no, no. Let me reassure my family~ we haven't moved over here, west of the Mississippi River and started drinking! : )

Champagne's is a store, not a liquor store, but a small local grocery store in this area.

It's not "sham pains", as in the drink.

It's "shawm pawns" (like shawl without the l but an m instead).

Does that make sense?!? You know, after living here this long...it does make sense. Somehow, it just sounds right when it rolls of the tongue...

A Louisiana Recipe

125 lbs of sausage
125 lbs of pork
125 lbs of rice
30 lbs of onions
Several canisters of Tony Chachere's
Various other spices in great quantities

Prepare and gather the ingredients over several days, have some big men who know how to cook up some fine food, and find the BIGGEST pot you've ever seen (well, that I've ever seen at least).

And they say things are bigger in Texas....phooey on that! Check out the size of that "pot"!

The result~ 400 servings of jambalya for our camp fundraiser at church!

And....the men actually made TWO of those pots full and had over 800 servings (big ones) of jambalya!

Where the Streets Have NO Many Names

If you come for a visit to this town, don't rely on a map or on google maps or on yahoo maps or any written directions unless they have come from someone that KNOWS the town.

Why??

Because this~

Is the same road as this~

And the same road as this~

(All within 2 blocks.)

It seems as though some of our street signs may have come from the sign surplus store. They weren't able to buy the full set, but the signs match close enough for the mail to get delivered no matter how you write the address.
On one end of our road it says Street, the other end of our road says Avenue (it's all of 2 blocks long). You can write it either way, the mail will get to us just fine. Or, you can not right Street OR Avenue and the mail will still get to us.
Another street in town is Beulah, down the block it's Bulah. Another example is Rooney and the sign across the stop sign says Rodney...the same street.
Those are the quirky street signs we have noticed, there are likely more or moore or moor out there that we don't know about....but we are always on the look out!

The Mighty Mississippi

Just a few comments~

1. These pictures were taken from the east side of the Mississippi River (from the top of the Capitol).

2. I didn't know people actually lived west of the Mississippi River.

3. Now I actually live west of the Mississippi River!!!

4. EVERY time our family drives across the Mississippi River, my historically-minded husband says, "The mighty Mississippi, leading geographical feature of these fifty nifty United States, transportation backbone of our great country, inspirer of dreams and stories. The Mighty Mississippi River." (Feel free to use that the next time you cross the Mississippi River!)

A Lovely Lady

Eunice....a lovely woman, whose husband loved her enough to name a little town in the middle of Louisiana after her.

This statue stands at the end of the main street in Eunice.

My family thinks she bears some resemblance to Mary Poppins...which always makes us feel like a "spoon full of sugar" and rather "supercalifragilisticexpialidocious"!

Little Surprise

Never in my life, in my entire imagination, have I ever thought I would wake up with a crawfish claw in my ditch. It's just such a rather odd thought.

Got an envie (OHN-vee) for some crawfish?

That's a new word we've learned here~ envie. It's basically means a "hankering" or "hankerin'", which was the word of choice where we moved from.

So, the question repeats~ Got an envie for some crawfish?

You can have some here...

Or here...

Or here...

A Picture of Family Faith

Yesterday was the National Day of Prayer, and like many towns and cities across America, our town had a time of prayer at noon. Folks gathered at the pavilion next to City Hall while ministers from various denominations led in prayer.

I arrived a few minutes late while waiting for piano lessons to finish. As the kids and I stood there in the back of the gathering, this is what we saw~

A mama and her 2 girls gathered for this time of prayer. Many were there, but this is the image that caught my eye.
